Scapa Pathfinder 1 Year Inspection

Scapa Pathfinder 1 Year Inspection

The ‘Scapa Pathfinder’ was back in Buckie this week for her 1 year warranty inspection. Based in Orkney and owned by the council the vessel was brought down for an inspection to ensure everything is as it should be following a year of service.

Delivered to her owner in July 2019, the 22.20-metre pilot vessel was designed by Macduff and built by Armon Shipyard in Spain. The all aluminium hull design was evaluated by resistance specialists Wolfson Unit to gauge the propulsion demands. She was required to match the capabilities of the existing council vessels whilst additionally carrying more fuel and complying to full IMO Tier III emission regulations. Following the completion on the vessel in August 2019 sea trials were conducted where she comfortable met requirements, achieving 25 knots at 100 per cent MCR thanks to her twin MTU 10V 2000 M72 marine engines developing 900 kW.

Full details on the vessel can be found here

Projects Reaching a Milestone

Projects Reaching a Milestone

In the last week, some of the projects we have been working on have reached a milestone. The design for a 10m fishing vessel was sold to an individual on the west coast of the United States earlier in the year. In the past few months, he has made great progress on the vessel, initially building each unit in a small shed they have been transported by road to a larger shed with an overhead crane for assembly. The build is well underway and the hull should be completed in the coming weeks.

In Turkey, a 13m twin-screw harbour tug, built by Atlantis Marine Services, has been turned over following the successful completion of the hull. Built upside down the vessel was backed out of the shed where two cranes assisted in the turn. Once the right way up the vessel was moved back inside where it awaits the wheelhouse and deck structure to be added.

It was an early start to launch the fishing vessel ‘Jacqueline Anne’ last Friday. Following its build, in Buckie by Macduff Shipyards, the boat was taken down the slip using a self-propelled modular transporter at low tide. The vessel was then secured in position with the transporter removed and the wait for the tide to come in and float her began.

Macduff Ship Design’s Low Carbon Footprint

Macduff Ship Design’s Low Carbon Footprint

Macduff Ship Design has recently moved to fully renewable gas and electricity provider which supplements the solar panel array installed on the roof of the office.

In 2015 we made a substantial investment into a 9.8 kWp solar PV system which covers one half of the office roof. As a direct result, we have avoided 37 tonnes of CO2 and produced 54Mwh of energy. The panels generate more than enough energy to power the office and the surplus energy produced is fed back into the national grid as green energy.

In 2019 we also invested in an electric vehicle which is predominantly charged directedly off the solar panels. Our transportation is carefully planned to use the EV where possible.

These are just some of the ways we are striving to lower our carbon footprint and work towards a greener future.

25.00m ASD FiFi Tug

Following on from the recent launch of a new 30.00m ASD harbour tug built in collaboration with TOR Group we are thrilled to announce we have secured another contract to design a 25.00m tug for them. The vessel is a development of the two 25.00m ASD harbour tugs previously built by Tor Marine to Macduff designs. The arrangement will have accommodation for 16 crew including two single berth officer cabins and feature separate junior and senior mess rooms. The new more powerful vessel is predicted to achieve a minimum bollard pull of 48 tonnes ahead.

We are delighted with the completion of another successful design built by TOR Group. The 30m ASD FiFi tug is a development of our previously successful 30m tug and marks the 22nd launched vessel that we have designed for TOR.

Classed to Bureau Veritas BV-I HULL MACH TUG FIRE FIGHTING SHIP 1 AUT-UMS Unrestricted Navigation the vessel carries 160m3 of oil fuel, 30m3 of freshwater, 16.6m3 of water ballast, 9m3 of foam and 9m3 of detergent. Her overall length is 30m, beam 11m and moulded depth 5m with an operating draft aft of about 5.2m USK.  Propelled by two Yanmar 6EY22AW 1330kW main engines rated at 1330kw, driving Schottel SRP 1012 CP ASD units, on trials it produced 42 Tonnes of Bollard pull ahead and 40 tonnes astern.

Equipped as a FiFi 1 tug she has two fire monitors with a capacity each of 1200m3 provided by two main engine pumps rated at 1329m3 each. Auxiliary power is from two Cat C6.6 each rated at 125kw. Deck equipment comprises a forward-mounted towing winch with a rated line pull of 20t and brake load of 130t, an aft Mampaey 65t towing hook and a hydraulic deck crane. Accommodation is for 9 persons in a mixture of single and twin-berth cabins, with en-suite and communal wash places, galley/mess and laundry.   At this time the vessel is available for charter or sale through the TOR Group

Two new 10-meter fishing vessel’s, built by Jalna Construction are nearing completion in their Middlesbrough yard. Built to our design, the small fishing vessels are now up for sale by the owner and preparations have been made to allow for both trawling and crabbing. With the option of a viver tank for storing live catch or trawl equipment for hauling fish, they can be adapted to suit the new owner’s requirements.

The design has also been sold as a kit to a client in America who is constructing the boat himself and is well underway with the build.

Incline Survey’s Aberdeenshire

Following a slow return to a new normal and the transition into the next Phase of lockdown, vessel owners have been getting in touch to book our services for an incline test. In addition to incline and lightship tests, our fully trained Naval Architects and MCA Workboat Code Examiner can offer Annual and Mid-term surveys for workboats as well as commercial RIBs and motor/sailing yachts. From incline experiments and lightships tests to valuation and condition surveys we are equipped to carry these out across Scotland and the U.K.

The ‘Island Junior’ was originally built as a workboat that for the past number of years has acted as a harvest vessel for the aquaculture industry. However, she has now been converted for a role as a net-washer. This required the addition of an ROV, an ROV control room and the systems required to support the operations. In addition to the incline, this boat also required a renewal survey (both in-and-out of water) to be carried out, both of which were conduct here in MacDuff, Aberdeenshire.

On the opposite end of the size scale, we will this week carry out an incline examination on the 64m ‘Artemis’ fishing vessel based in Fraserburgh. Formally the ‘Resolute’ this ship has been purchased by new owners and requires its 5-year incline. Despite the difference in size, the same methodology is used for the inclining experiment howbeit with longer pendulums and heavier weights.

Finally, we will be heading to Orkney to carry out a lightship and incline test on the newly procured ‘Nordic Sea’. This passenger ferry which is built to Norwegian rules has been purchased by Orkney Council as a replacement for the ageing ferry ‘Golden Mariana’. Due to the fact it was operating under a Norwegian certificate, several known works have been carried out to ensure it meets the standards to bring her up to the full UK Classification and Certification.

Should you require a survey of any kind, be it witnessing an incline or a valuation survey, please don’t hesitate to get in contact to discuss your requirements. We would be delighted to work with you and are available to work across the U.K.

Atlantic Titan – Update

In June 2019 we were delighted to deliver Atlantic Titan to her owners in Canada following a 2-year design and build. This month marks the 1-year anniversary of her delivery and as the pictures show she looks just as good as the day she was delivered.

The owners wanted a ship that could be both a trawler and a crabber, additionally, there were strict length and tonnage restrictions to conform to. Below decks, just forward of the engine room sits two 50,000 litre RSW tanks designed to keep live catch in pristine condition. These tanks serve a secondary purpose and by removing the forward panels of the tanks the main fish hold space extends to 260 cubic meters. This state-of-the-art feature, paired with a full factory processing deck, allows the vessels to convert seamlessly between being a crabber and trawler. Despite so much space dedicated to operations, there are still provisions for 14 crew comprised of 3 x 4 berth cabins and 2 single berth cabins as well as WC facilities, all positioned on the shelter deck below the wheelhouse. On main deck level forward there is a large mess and lounge area which allows for comfortable seating and an area where the crew can relax.

The versatility of the vessel combined with its striking design and innovative features means Atlantic Titan secured herself a place in RINA’s publication of Significant Small Ships of 2019. In addition, the owner has remarked that they are delighted with her performance over the past year. The recognition of the Atlantic Titans original design and the encouraging feedback from the owners truly showcases MacDuff Ship Designs ability to design and deliver.

27.50m Workboat “Helen Mary”

The 27.50m fish farm workboat “Helen Mary” was designed by MacDuff Ship Design and built by Macduff Shipyards in 2015. Owned by Inverlussa Marine Services she has spent the past 5 years as a multi-purpose support vessel working on a wide range of projects.  Recently, having secured a contract in the aquaculture sector, she has returned to MacDuff for refit in readiness for her new role.

It’s well known in the aquaculture industry that sea lice are a serious issue and an outbreak of lice in a pen can make products unmarketable. To combat this issue ‘Helen Mary’ has been prepped to have new Hydrolicing equipment installed. Hydrolicing is a relatively new, environmentally-friendly, solution in which the fish are brought aboard the vessel and deloused through the use of turbulent water. This process requires a large amount of power, more than what the original auxiliary engines could handle, so a YorPower standalone generator has been fitted on a new portside structure above the main deck. In addition to the increase in power new sea suction points have been integrated into the hull to feed the hydrolicing with a continuous supply of seawater. To make way for all of this new equipment it was necessary to remove some existing deck equipment including the main winch.

With the work here in Scotland almost complete, MacDuff Ship Design completed a lightship survey and incline test to allow for a new stability book to be produced. Once the final finishing touches are made to the deck she will leave us here in Aberdeenshire and make her way to Norway to receive the Hydrolicing equipment. We wish her all the best on her voyage and in her new role as a dedicated Hydrolicing vessel.
